Calculate the blood volume in an adult male given:

  • The amount of Evan’s Blue injected = 5.6 mg
  • Conc. of dye in plasma after equilibration = 0.002 mg/ml
  • Haematocrit value = 46%
  • Amount of the dye leaving the circulation during equilibration = 0.2 mg

Blood volume is normal

Evan’s Blue neither leaves the vascular system nor penetrates the erythrocytes.

Radioactive iodine can be used in  place of Evan’s blue.
