Physiology Problem 3

Calculate the ECF volume and Total Body Water

  • Amount of Sucrose injected = 150 mg
  • Plasma Sucrose levels after being mixed = 0.01 mg/ml
  • Amount of Sucrose excreted after being mixed = 10 mg
  • Intracellular fluid volume = 28 L

TBW is normal.

Sucrose is a type of marker substance, using which ECF volume can be measured. Hence it is referred as sucrose space.

Sucrose diffuses more evenly throughout all the sub-compartments of ECF.
